For a cat behavior pro like me, Folies Félines stands for “Feline Folies”, reminding us of the quirky ways we find cats so adorable, but also of the things that baffle us about them.
What does a cat behavior pro do?
Folies Félines offers cat behavior consulting services to anyone who has one or many cats under their care.
The term “behaviorist” tends to be reserved for professionals holding either a veterinary specialty in behavior or a Masters or PhD in the field of Applied Animal Behavior. Cat behavior consulting is on a parallel track.
Cat behavior consultants gain knowledge, experience and training through a variety of opportunities (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants foundation, Pet Professional Guild, international Cat care, Fear Free for Pets, Petpro, Behavior Works, Low Stress Hanlding University, Shelter Behavior Hub and American College of Veterinary Behaviorists to name just a few). Today, the rise of online education has democratized specialized fields that were once restricted only to those who were fortunate enough to be able to pursue studies in a limited number of available establishments.
Gaining experience through volunteering and fostering cats with behavior issues is also an invaluable learning growth opportunity. It’s one that is not necessarily available through more “formal” education channels.
We work cooperatively with veterinary behaviorists, pet fitness experts, pet sitters, general practice veterinarians, etc. Our common goal is to achieve the best outcome for our shared clients. We are all part of the same team and want the same thing: the best quality of life for you and your cats.
Can cat behavior pros give medical advice?
Cat behavior consultants cannot prescribe medication and are not trained in veterinary medicine. They cannot diagnose or treat medical issues. Our role is to help solve cat behavior issues through training of both human and pets, and through environmental engineering.
What behavior issues can a cat pro work with?
Behavior issues cat behavior consultants can work with include: aggression towards other cats or towards dogs, aggression towards humans, fearful behavior, litter box issues, problems related to destruction of items and excessive meowing. Cat behavior professionals are not only expertly trained in modifying behavior, but also in HOW to train animals. And these animals include cats! This training involves making it worth their while to participate. This creates a positive, engaging and fun activity for both the cats and their humans! It also means that caring for your cat does not have to be scary, because, believe it or not, cats can be trained to participate in their care cooperatively (nail trims, taking medication, etc.) .
Whether you call us a cat coach, a cat expert, a cat behavior pro, a cat therapist, a cat behavior expert, a cat tamer or a cat consultant, we are there to untangled the knots that have formed in your relationship. We help your cat thrive under your care. We also increase your happiness at having the privilege of sharing your loving home with them.
